DB Read only and will not compact and repair

Can anyone help

when I tried to compact and repair my DB I sometimes get a message saying that my file is corrupt and sometimes I do not
the last time I tried to compact and repair a Db1 file was created (fortunately) and my original Db was deleted
the message also said set the Db to read only in order to compact and repair

Can anyone advise how to prevent this from occuring

This happened to me a few times and the only way I could get out of it was to create a new database and import all the tables, forms, queries etc. into it.
