DB conversion 97 to 2003

Hello guys,
I have to convert a db from 97 to 2003 format, the current database has an MDE file created as well and I need to do that.None of that is a problem I know how things should go, but I am getting an error "You can't convert or enable and MDE file" and finding out what that meant informed me that i need to create a new MDE file when I conver the original db.
However I am suspecting that I need the, the original db (like a copy) that existed before the MDE file was created for this 97 version and i would just like to be sure if that is the case or if not would somebody have any suggestions for me. What could I do?

You need the original mdb file, convert that to 2003, then make an MDE
