DB Changes Cause CE Reports To Fail

My company is using CE10 against multiple data sources, including a SQL Server database. The address master table in the SQL Server database contains only 4 fields, and is lacking the actual address fields (ex. ad_line1, ad_line2, city, state, zip). I need to add the address fields to the address master table, but if I do, it will cause the approximately 400 daily and weekly reports which currently reference this table to fail. Is there any way for me to change the address master table without causing my current reports to fail because of the database change?? I do not want ot have to refresh all the reports with CR and then import them back into CE...

This is why I suggest that you NOT use tables in reports, rather Views. You could alter the table and not cause problems then. Any reports going forward could go against a new view.

Since the reports are already in CE, I think thaqt you're in deep kim chee, you'd have to write code to open each report and perform a verify database and then a save as back into CE, and then reset the parameters...

Consider using Views in the future.

Hi,
It might be easier to create a new address master table ( with a new name) from the current one for future use..

Or, so as NOT to recreate the problem with Turk's solution....create a new table and a View and the problem goes away.

I never understand why people don't grasp this time saving solution, it's suggested by Oracle and MS frequently for this very purpose, reusability and maintenance.

Hi,
Thanks synapse ( BTW, congrats on being named tipmaster), I assumed ( not a good idea ) that after creating the new table a view would be used to access the data in it, as per your recommendation..

Thanks Vampire and Turkbear. Unfortunately, I inherited a data warehouse with a multitude of problems which I am attempting to straighten out right now. Who creates an address master table with no addresses?? I was pretty sure I was gonna have to do the manual refresh in CR and reload to CE, but I htought I would check with the experts. I am going to use views on a go-forward basis so this will be the LAST time I have to reload these reports...
