Dates on X-Axis with line chart

I am using CR 11 and I am trying to display a line chart using a date field for the x axis. I am trying to get CR to display a date in 'Jan-99' format once for each year and show ticks for the other 11 months in between labels. Each record in my datatable has 1) a date field that is the first day of each month and 2) a decimal field used for the y axis. The difference between my min and max on the x-axis is about 5 years. Any suggestions on achieving what I want? If I need to set up my datatable differently to work around a CR limitation, that's ok.
