Dates: Current or Selected

I want a table to determine how long people have been members of an organisation.

I need to either enter the 'end of membership date' or have the current/today's date displayed to show that members are still active.

I can set a query to display the current date; or set the query allowing me to enter any date. But I can't set the query to give me the choice within the same query of displaying the current date or choosing a different date. Ideally, I'd like to be able to perform this task in a table and not a query.

Any help will be greatly appreciated
