I need precision to be seconds if possible, but the range between the dates could be days... anyone know what the limits are and have ideas on what the best strategies are for dealing with this. I have no problem checking if the time difference is weeks or months and then using a bugger scale...not sure how...

I do not believe there is a limit, but just as a test I did a datediff of seconds from 1957 to now. No issues (billions of seconds).

Did some further testing. Appears they are using a long integer for the number, goes negative after about a 60 year period (~2,147,483,000 seconds).
