Unable to close calendar display in Date time picker activex control(Microsoft common controls)

My project has a Sheridan toolbar and a date time picker activex control. I click on the combo arrow of the calendar. This displays the calendar as a dropdown. On clicking the toolbar item the form in unloaded and calendar control should vanish. But what happens is that the form is unloaded and calendar control goes away but the dropdown portion of the calendar still hangs around. How do I get rid of this..I tried to send the control a WM_CLOSE with a sendmessage. That did not work.

Try capturing the close event and change focus before allowing the close/terminate to take place.
