I am using Access with VB. I have a field that is a date, short date format. I am updating the field based on a date variable in vb. If I leave the variable null then it still inserts a date, usually something like 1/1/1901 or something like that. I dont necessarily always want a date entered into the field. How can I get around this? The field is set to required-no.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Check the Default Value property for the field. If it is set to 0 then Access will automatically initialize the field. If you clear that field then the field will initialize to NULL for a new record.
