Date field entry with only year

I don't know if this is more appropriate for the 'tables' forum or this one, so I'm sticking it here.

I have a date field for which I sometimes only have the year or occasionally the year and month. I can't enter only the year or even the month/year as that's rejected.

I'm reluctant to convert to a text field as I lose the built-in capability of working with it as a date.

Does any one have a method of entering just a year into a date field?

Since you are trying to accompolish several tasks in one field, the only way I can think of is to make it a text box. You could have in the Before Upadate of the filed a message to pop up indicating what to do. Also, you might have a policy to enter incomplete dates such as
00/00/2003. Then create a query/s to show records that only have partical dates.
