date exported in wrong format from cognos to Excel

Hi all

I need urgent help with a date format issue.
I have a report in Cognos 8.4 that exports data to Excel 2002. The date fields are not always exported in the date format (dd/mm/yy hh:mm:ss) but sometimes is a number.
Example:

13.07.2010 18:00
40372.72916666

To me it seems it happends random and I can not find an explanation nor how to correct it. Format the date in the report to DATE or CHAR didn't help.
Does somebody have a solution for this?
