Currently I am using NT Backup to create a copy of our Exchange DB which Commvault then backs up this file to disk & then to tape(DR purposes). We have been looking at ways to more efficently back the Exchange DB up one idea we are looking at is DataMigrator Agent for Exchange(message level backup is running to long and we really need to archive mail since people don't clean out there mailboxes). My question is if i install this product on Exchange, if in doing so will it shrink my NT database backup. There has been some debate from my team members that it will but I am thinking that it won't.

Why are you using NT Backup to do the DB backups?
CV exchange DB backups work great (For me)
I have 2 exchange 2k3 clusters with about 800gb on each one.
It takes me about 3-4hours to complete my db backups.
Which then get aux copied to tape for offsite storage
I keep 2 days worth of DB backups onsite... the rest are offsite

Also, I think to install DM for Exchng you have to have the exchange CV agents loaded.

From what I've been told(before my time as Commvault Administrator) the DR portion of a test didn't work when restoring the database. Then the work around was to backup this file using NT backup. I guess when they attempted to restore an Exchange server database to a different piece of hardware at a DR test it didn't work.

Also we are looking into redundant servers here and offsite since email has become more business imperative for our company.

Hi

I've dealt with DataMigrator quite a lot recently and would like to say that it works really well...you can see your Exchange backups shrink quite a lot as you are backing up a stub rather than a full message with attachments.

You can install DataMigrator for Exchange (DMEX) with no other CV Exchange agents installed...filesystem agent will be installed as default but, you don't need to use it and you won't pay for an extra license...you will obviously need the CommServe (Master server), Media Agent and storage.

DMEX is policy based and you decide how much mail will be migrated by the options you select in the policy settings ie.
Only migrate mails that are over 6 months old and over 5kb in size.
You can also filter out messages by percentage of users quotas (if you use them) or just remove attachments but, leave the message body intact.

You can also install an Outlook Add-In onto everyones pc that allows them to recall their own messages (when a message is migrated the user will still see the header of the message within Outlook).

From your post I think you are ready for moving away from NT backup as you are looking at redundancy...CommVault is ideal for this as you can incorparate the simple method of auxiliary copies to multiple locations or go down the replication route with CDR...I've just completed an install that involved replicating Exchange to a DR site and when we switched users over they were back receiving messages within a few minutes.

You can ask CV or your reseller to arrange a demo of DMEX for you.

mrfokker - I've done xchg db restores and they worked without a problem....was it an early version that you were using?

It was an early version of Commvault(5.9) to my understanding & it was restoring the Exchange Database to dis-similar hardware.

shouldn't be a problem if the Exchange setup is the same and you adhere to the caveats for out of place DB restores..it is a supported option for the db iDA.

Restores to disimiliar hardware is always prone to problems though ;-)
