Datagrid: edit button fires UpdateCommand

I have a datagrid on a page with another unrelated textbox. When the edit button on the datagrid is pushed the editcommand function is not fired and instead the updatcommand function fires causing an error. The error occurs because there are no editable boxes on the page because the editcommand will not fire. I have not been able to find any other help out there for this. Does anyone know if this is a known bug or am i doing something wrong??
