Hi guys,

For a job interview I've been asked to give an overview what devices I can find in a datacenter, and how far my knowledge goes regarding those devices.I must admit, I'm a sysadmin in a rather small company , our "datacenter" isnt bigger then a classroom,so I haven't got a clue what to expect in a datacenter of a major company like a bank , multinational ,....I hope that maybe you guys can give me some examples of realtime situations
What I've come up with so far( located in our "datacenter") :
passport, switches, hubs, routers, firewalls,SAN storage ,backup devices (tape units),unix servers, mainframes, windows servers.
Any additions would be welcome

Thx in advance,

kind regards,

RMGBelgium

Don't forget:

Fire Surpression, Backup Devices, Tape Safe, Air Handling/Conditioning...

Really, the correct answer would be "Whatever the company needs to serve their data needs, with enough devices to maintain data integrity and disaster recovery."

Hi,
It would also depend on whether the company had separate Data and Network Operations centers..

The Datacenter, in that case, would probably only have those devices needed to reliably access and protect their databases - Including some network connections for off-site redundancy, perhaps..

As far as 'tape safe' is concerned, don't have it in the datacentre, have it off site. I'd add CCTV too I think.

Making an Impression's stated purpose is"Light-hearted discussions on words, word usage, grammar, and related topics to improve our ability to communicate effectively and help project the right image."

How does this apply?

RMGBELGIUM, you might want to find a more appropriate forum for your question. Or try searching the net!

@anotherhiggins : I've looked in the forums here, if there is a forum that concerns general IT questions like mine, please tell me,because I didn't find one here, this one comes closest to a "general" forum. And believe me , I've searched the net, the only answers you find is how much hosting costs in data centers per month. As this forum is beeing browsed by lot's of sysadmins, chances are rather big getting a good answer to my question. And if posts about "driving etiquette US vs the rest of europe" can be placed here, I don't think a little question about an IT related subject is that out of place here.

BJCooperIT, did that bother you that much? Not trying to start a fight, just trying to understand what this forum is used for. I think this person is trying to "Make an Impession".

Just my thoughts

Thanks

He is trying to make an impression, but I agree with BJCooperIT that the forum he suggested is more appropriate.

"Well, that's something," Avi says. "Normally those two are mutually exclusive."

BJCooperIT is 100% correct. The questions that the OP asks are better asked in another forum.

Wouldn't you agree that the OP would fit better there?

okay, I get the message, this is the wrong forum, that's been made clear by now, I'll give it a try in the "development as a professional" forum as BJCooper has suggested.Perhaps it is more appropriate there.

Anyway, thx for pointing me in the right direction

RMGBELGIUM - I thought you were going to repost in the other forum? I've been waiting over there to reply.
