We are running Oracle 8i on NT Server SP6 and one of our databases will not start this morning.

If you stop the services, the database services stops and restarts without an error, but the OracleStart<DBName> service reports an error: " Error 2186 The service is not responding to the control function." The service then shows up as started - but when users try and login to the database, it says the database was not found.

We have restarted the TNSListener service, the database and the OracleStart service numerous times - same error. We've restarted the server twice...same problem.

Event Viewer reports this error: "The Open Procedure for service "Oracle8" in DLL "oraperf.dll" failed. Performance data for this service will not be available. Status code returned is DWORD 0."

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I think you should contact Oracle support about this problem. I found a similar error in Metalink document 34626.998, but the database version was only Oracle 7.3.3. The solution there was to recreate the NT service for OracleStartSid. Since you have a different database version, it's extremely unclear that this approach would work for you.

I'm not convinced that the Event Viewer messages you are seeing have anything to do with your problem. I've seen similar messages in Oracle 7 and Oracle 8.0, and they tend to be harmless. The fix is described in Metalink document 1039572.6.
