Database window won't display - internet explorer error

A new computer running WinXP sp2, IE6, Office 2000 and Access gives an error along the lines of it can't draw the database windwo because it needs an updated version of IE...this was before the computer had been anywhere near the internet. We have since downloaded and installed the available Windows updates and still getting the error. Any ideas?
