Hi just been handed a 2000 access database which contains the following fields:

first name
second name
address- 1
address-2
tel no etc etc

Around 15 fields.
The Databse has 3000 records yet the mdb file is 2.2gb

Can anyone suggest why?

thanks

Ian

The whole database has only one table?

Have you tried a compact and repair?

Hi

Have to admit I'm no expert on Access, Ok on Alpha5 and visual db but Access is a bit of a mystery. Unfortunatley it's a very good client and times is hard.

The database actually consits of four tables (being a membership system)

members which has 3797 records

Children which has 3500 records

products which has 17 records

visits which has 1 records

temp_visit which has 0 records

Not a big database?

I will try compact and repair when I go on site later

thanks

Ian

Not a big database?
Not on the face of it, but it depends on the type of fields and what's stored on them.

Hopefully the C&R will remedy the problem for you.

Prior to Access 2007 storing images or OLE objects in the database could be very bad as Duane points out. Someone handed a db with one table, 15 fields, and 900 records. Each record had one field for a picture of the piece of equipment. The db was nearly 2 gigs. I pulled out all of the images and put them in a seperate directory linked by an ID field and the db went down to 3 megs. An image bloats the db about 3-10 times the size of the image.

Correct... I would recommend MaJP's approach from experience also. Add a field with a link to the files which are stored on an external network drive... then u can use Follow Hyper Link to call up images in a form. htwh...

Hi

the database does have images but these are already hauled in via a path. The database is as I said 2.2 gb think I'll try creating a new table and importing the data as suggested

cheers

Ian

Only other cause for a DB to be that large is a huge number of transactions performed and never any compact/repair. Also, I believe the maximum size of the DB is only 2.0 GB; if it is larger; that is yet another issue. After Import into a New Database (Fresh/Clean) check the size. Also, can u upgrade from 2000 to 2003; it may be a good move to add some stability. or even 2002? Good luck...
