Hi,
Every time I secure a database using (User-Level Security Wizard) I can't access it. I get this message "You do not have exclusive access to the database at this time....)eventhough I give myself all the rights to access the databae...I have done this many times before it always worked...
P.S I can access tables and queries but not reports and Forms.
Please Help

Have you specifically joined the workgroup that the database is using?

Either use the Workgroup Administrator to join the required workgroup (.mdw) file or use a desktop shortcut to open the file by specifically referencing the .mdw file.

Use the shortcut path format
"Path to MSAccess.exe" "Path to Access file" /wrkgrp "Path to required .mdw File"

Include the quote marks as shown.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
I am not sure of what I am supposed to do. I always created a secured database using the wizard (able to access all objects without any problems), and I always use the shortcut to open the database. I am not sure what you mean by using the workgroup admin to join the required workgroup (.mdw). I know how to create a group (users) if that's what you mean. When I create a secured database a shortcut is created with it to open the database. Are you saying to replace its path with the one you send me? ("Path to MSAccess.exe" "Path to Access file" /wrkgrp "Path to required .mdw File")
Please explain. I really appreciate your help and forgive me if I am confusing you.
Thanks

I always just create my own security for it. i hate the way that thing works. it's so complicated and if it ever fails on the site, no one knows what to do with it. My suggestion would be to create your own login. run that login screen on startup and disable all other things except for the X or minimize. If the login fails, close out of access, if it passes, open up your main screen. This may not be the easiest way to do it. but you can re-use the code in any project that you do.

Hi lightning:
I created a new secured database using the "Wizard". The shortcut path match exaclty the one you sent me. Again the same problem not able to access the forms and reports. Any more suggestions?
Thanks

Hi David,
Thanks for your reply.
Can you send an example of a code you use to secure your database? I appreciate it.
Ismail

I'd say: forget security. Use one of the linked functions to grab the user's Windows username (or something--see faq181-3779) and just build your 'security' around this. As yoda says, "Either do or do not. There is no try". What he meant to say, of course, is that you shouldn't bother with passwords in Access if you're just going to store them in a table you can look at by pressing F11 and clicking on the "Tables" tab. When you present the "it automatically logs them in" option, most everyone's happy, and if they're not, then they shouldn't be using Access.

Everyone have a fabulous day.
