Hi,

I am trying to install standby server. Everything is going well but when i try to restore active server database on standby server, it takes more than 5 hours. The database size is 450 Mb.
Did i make a mistake? Or is there any way to increase the restoring speed?
for information, backing up the active servers database is taking my 33 minutes for 450 Mb.

Thanks for your helps....

I am unaware of any method to speed up the restore function. It is widely known that the restore process takes much longer than the backup, but 5 hours is an awfully long time.
The last time that I restored a db from active to standby, it took about 1.5 hours (backup took 12 minutes). So, it you apply this linearly, it may not be too far out of whack...

Thank you for reply Jephph. Another question to you. What is your backup size?

Just curious, what is the size and number of database partitions do u have?

Viperen --

Sorry, it's been a couple of years, so I don't remember how large the database was.

I think your database backup size is 450MB and not your database size. Your true database size is the combined size of all partitions F: and above. In 5.0 this could be 64 GB. In 6.0, it can be up to 128 GB. I think this is what determines the restore time and not just the size of the backup. However, I do admit that this is just a theory...

Good Luck
Rob

You are right Teekov. My database backup size is 450 MB. My disk partitions are:
C:20 GB
D:16 GB
F:32 GB
G:32 GB
H:32 GB

For testing prupose, right now there is 20 agents and 1 supervisor. It is active since 2 weeks.

Hi Teeekow,

Its been my observation that SCCS takes a long time to build the database when there are multiple database partitions.
For example in SCCS 5.0, it takes only 30-40 minutes to built a single database partition of 16 gb, whereas when there are 16gb x 4 partitions, it took me approximately 4 hours. Restoration of 5 gb of database backup on a single partition takes 40 minutes only.
So i guess, the more number of database partions, the longer time it takes for restoration.and my opinion is, do not make large partitions unless required.

Pakya,
Even my system release is 6.0, i think that it will not effect duration. My database backup size is only 450 mb. It is very small when i compare with yours. So it means that database size is not important. The most important thing is that partition size.
So what is the solution? Maybe we can start with 1 partition. When it will fill up we can add 1 more. We can continue like this. But if you have stand-by server, i think that you can face some problems when you try to switchover.

For what it is worth, I just completed the active/standby switchover this past peekend for my SCCS 5.0 environment. There was a total of 38 minutes of downtime. When re-configuring the old active as the new standby, the backup took 12 minutes and the restore took 93 minutes. The size of the database at my site is 48 GB.

Hope this helps
Rob

Rob,
How many partition do you have? And what are your partitions size?
