Database or Page?

I would imagine they use a database, especially as they would want their users to be able to search for keywords in each article.

the database is just a technical detail. I would believe the developers of the major sites are more concerned with a rich domain model rather than a database driven website.
with the focus on a domain the data is persisted/retrieved from repository objects. the repositories may talk to a database, web service, indexing file (like lucene.net), or in memory storage.
