I have a database which opens in exculsive mode whenever loaded. By default, all my databases open shared... any ideas on what could be causing this?

Several questions:
What version is this Access '95 '97 or 2000?
Is it on a network drive?
If it's on a Network drive does it do this if moved temporarily to the local drive?

It is an access 97 Database running on a local drive.

Double check this:
Tools... Options...
On the Advanced tab, on the far right (top) make sure "Default Open Mode" is set to "Shared" and not "Exclusive"

Thought I would reply to my own question in case this is of help to anyone else. This is going to seem obvious but...

I consistently opened the database by selecting it from the list of recent projects. Apparenly, I had opened it for exclusive use the first time it was added to the list and Access saves the method used to open it. Therefore, each time I opened the database it was for exclusive use, despite the fact that it was set for shared use. By simply selecting it from the file menu, the problem was solved.
