Please, help me with understanding of "database maintaning"
What does it mean?

It's the same thing as administering a database. It's doing the maintenance tasks that are necessary to keep your database and the data available to the users.

It also involves making the programming and schema changes necessary to adjust to changing requirements ina production database.

Other maintenance tasks would include: creating users, changing permissions, deleting users, setting up backups, monitoring performance, tracking down errors and resolving the casues, etc.
