Database for Registration thoughts

I need some help flushing out an idea. Not sure if this is even possible so any ideas of help would be greatly appreciated.

I want to set up an online registration system where users can sign up for a class and have their information dumped into a db, easy enough.

My question though, I want to limit how many people can sign up. If I have a class of 30 when the 31st person signs up it will dump their info into a different "wait list" database.

Any thoughts on how to go about this?

Or,

Put them in the same table and use a status field to indicate IN class or Waiting List - with a number to ensure first come, first served.
