Hi everybody !

I'm currently using Arcserve 6.5 build 620 on a NT 4.0 server.
All services start OK when I boot the machine, however when I start arcserve, the DB engine can't get on. (timeout, no more explanations :( )
I looked through the threads, I tried some solutions like change the user under which services start (I created a specific admin/backup user), and now even the sevice doesn't start !!

I can also say that backup works OK, but I don't have any file listing available, so for the partial restore operation, there's no good...

If anyone already got this kind of problem, I'd be glad to know how he managed to solve it (or at least what he tried to solve it, if he couldn't).

Thanx a lot.

Oops, I forgot...
Now that I changed the user (for the services), I've got a :
Error 2140 : An internal NT error has occured

So...

Hi Sonic,

Some of the details you provide are pointing towards a possibly corrupt database. I would do the following in this order:

1) Try re-initializing the database first then stop and restart all engines and try a backup / restore again.
2) Apply the newest Arcserve Service Pack (SP2A I think) and try backup / restore again.
3) Pending the above you may need to uninstall / reinstall Arcserve as the database may be to far corrupt. ensure you have backed up your backup jobs (.asx files) and make sure you have recorded any of the filter settings you need to reapply.

As for the 2140 Error, try to stop all services, go into the NT Services tab to the 3 different engines and re-input the user ID and password. Then try to start the engines again and see if this helps. The other thing might be in Arcserve itself if you have saved the backup job with a former user ID with security and you have deleted this ID, you may need to recreate the backup job and apply the new ID to it.

Let me know if I can help further.

ARRRRRRRRRRRRGHLLLLL !!!

I uninstalled ARCserveit 6.5, I replaced it by ARCserveit 6.61 build 834, and now :

- I ran the server admin, every engine runs (job, tape & database), that's cool
- BUT the manager doesn't want to launch any more : ASMGR.exe - the application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000006)

So I've go a fully functional database engine, but I can't use it...
And of course, I can't reboot this server in the middle of the day (only before 8 AM and after 6 PM)

I looked another thing : I have only SP4 under windows NT. Does that matter ? Because since I can't backup system, it's out of question for me to try to install SP6, for example...

Anywayr thanks a lot for your help.

Precision : I looked in the event viewer, I got this message :

ASDiscoverySvc [EC=193], Failed to launch CA_LIC process

I think this error shall come from the Unicenter TNG which has been installed at the same time.
I don't know what is this CA_LIC process, couldn't find any information about it in the integrated help (ARCserveit and TNG)

So if you have an idea...
Thanx

Hi Sonic,

Well good to hear that the engines are now running properly. Unfortunately if you have gone from Arcserve 6.5 to 6.61 you will need the license file for this product. If you don't you will have to contact Computer Associates to obtain one.

As for the Arcserve Server Admin - if you are having problems running this on the server itself - no problem. Install the Server Admin portion on another server (or workstation). You can manage the server from there.

To install this re-run the product installation and choose a custom installation and choose only the manager portion. install this to your alternate machine. Once completed and you run the AS Manager from the new machine you will need to connect to the Arcserve Server. To do this, type in the server name where you local computername is displayed (next to the engine lights). After a short wait it should connect.

You can also do this same procedure for managing the hardware (Device Manager) by typing in the server name and then it will display the devices on the Arcserve server.

Let me know how you make out.
