Database engine for book digitalization

Hello!

I am working on digitalization of a massive amount of paper publications (books, magazines etc.). They must be cross-refereced, a user friendy search must be present and an index is needed. Is there any database engine which is customised for such needs? I would also need some import tools, if they exist, to import data from text format (e.g. *.doc or *.txt) into the database. Do such tools exist at all?

In the end the final application must be as cross-system compatible as possible, this means windows platforms (95/98/2000/xp/vista) should be supported, but the application should also work on symbian, windows mobile and palm os.

At one stage there was a product called InMagic, which was designed for libraries. It may still be around.

Surely you mean that all the platforms you mentioned would be clients of the system you're planning. This suggests that you need to clarify in your own mind what the different application tiers are.

I would say yes, there are such systems available. However, depending on your needs, they won't be cheap. How massive are you talking? To me, massive is in excess of a million documents. I'm responsible for 56 million + documents.

What you are really talking about is an imaging system. You build allications for different needs (i.e. one for books, one for magazines, etc). Data is kept in a wide variety of repostories such as SQL Server, Oracle, etc.
