Database/DropDown Values Access via SOAP/API?

Hi we are using OpenText internal database tables directly now, to read out some values which are also available in the category Metadata when users use the UI.

Is there a way to switch from that to using the Web Service/API?

Tables themselves are used to populate category drop-downs. I tried to actually get category values via SOAP calls (successfully), but I am unable to read the actual drop-down values visible in the UI.

That's really what I am after.

should be available via REST or WebService requests or you could create a LiveReport wrapper for the DB query.
