'database corrupt ' when compacting db

When I try to compact the database in Notes I get the message "database is corrupt - cannot allocate space". How can I overcome this please ?
nb. Notes version is 5.0.6

I've gotten this error before and I fix it by doing a copy-style compact??? Not sure since you're getting it doing the compact
