Using CR XI w/SQL SVR

I've got an existing report I am trying to modify. I've added 2 tables, deleted one of the joins to make it a left outer join. I receive the following error:

Database Connector Error: 'If tables are already linked then the join type cannot change.'

What does this mean and how do I fix?

What does "deleted one of the joins to make it a left outer join" mean? Why would you delete it to make it a left outer? Why not just change it?

deleted one of the joins to make it a left outer join" I removed the link and re-linked with a left outer join, but this isn't the reason for the error, nor did it fix the problem.

I cleared all the links and rejoined the tables and this took care of my problem.

What I'd like to know is why did this occur? Does this always happen when you choose to add a table to a completed report when you want to modify it?

Most likely you have Auto-Smart Linking turned on. Auto-Smart Linking isn't so smart. If 2 fields have the same name, data type and length, Auto-smart linking assumes they should be linked. This isn't usually the case.

I am not sure how to turn this off in Crystal XI but I believe it is a registry setting. Maybe someone else knows?

Thank you for your explanation dgillz. And you are correct in that my Automatic Smart Linking was turned ON.

It can be turned off for version ll in Crystal Reports Options, Database tab, last item on the bottom under Advanced Options.
