Database Connector Error: If tables are already linked then the join..

We have an existing report with a sub report. When I am trying to modify report to by using left outer join on one of our tables to get rid of sub report, I am getting the below error.

Database Connector Error: If tables are already linked then the join type cannot change.

Automatic smart linking option was turned off. I am not sure why I am getting this error. Can anyone please help me how to resolve this issue.
