Database Connector Error (Chinese)

I have been tasked with migrating an old Crystal Reports app originally written under Seagate Crystal reports in the Neolithic age onto a new Windows 7 SP1 32 bit box where the existing version will not run.

I have installed Crystal version 14.0.2.364 and tried opening the .RPT files in the designer (which works), but whenever I try to access the data which resides in xbase tables I get a Database Connector Error followed by a bunch of Chinese characters. See attached image.

I have Googled this error and found a couple of very old threads out there which didn't seem to have a definitive solution, and none for a recent version of Crystal Reports.

As a total novice with Crystal reports I am mystified, and would appreciate any guidance.

Hmm - my attempt to attach an image to my prev post did not seem to work - however it doesn't give any additional information unless you are able to interpret the Chinese characters after the connect error message.

So please ignore the attachment.
