I stumbled upon a way to clean out garbage records in tables. These include records with chinese or "box" entries which Access creates from time to time by mistake. They tend to be hard to find and get rid of because of their ghost-like qualities: They are present and problematic but invisible to the "find mechanisms" of Access.
Anyhoo, I've found that the easiest way to rid your database of these is to simply copy and repaste your tables. This works very well, although I can only speculate as to why. My guess: Access doesn't recognize these records in the copy step and they never get copied.
