Hello, I work tech support for my university's fitness center, and we're trying to set up a training station for our new employees so that they can learn how to use our software without ruining our actual database. We heard that we could partition a harddrive and install our software on one and the database on another. Just how would that work? How would we get the software to connect to the database on the other partition?

It's easy to d. Simply add the path to your data source in your ODBC setup. Depending on your DB, you will have the opportunity to eiher enter the path or select the datasource.
