I know I have seen this somewhere, but after looking through the search, I can't find it. Hoa can you validate in SQL the data you are manipulating. Something like an IsChar function or IsNumeric. Somebody just kick me in the right direction and I will do the rest of the research.

I'm not aware of any "isnumeric" function in Oracle, unlike some other languages. I think you would have to write your own. Your function would accept a character string as input, and apply the Oracle to_number function. The exception handler would return "false" if to_number failed, otherwise the return would be "true".
 
Thanks Karluk. That is the work-around we came up with after I posted this. I just thought there might be an easier way.
