data type on memo field

Using dbase IV 2.0 I can list for 'word I'm looking for'$memofieldname.
But the similar situation, looking to find all memofields
that contain data, List for memofieldname > ' ' gives "data type error". Could you suggest how to word this search better so as not to get the error?
