This Friday i'm going to be migrating data onto our new server. I needed some help estimating how long it will take to transfer the data.

Its 25GB of data, I was going to transfer it by installing the old HDD to the new server, Old hard disk is SCSI Ultra3 7200 RPM, New HDD is SCSI Ultra3 10K RPM. How long do you think it will take using this method?

I would transfer the data over the network however, we only have a 10/100 enviroment, wish it was a gigabit.

Any other suggestions to speed this transfer up?

How longs a piece of string?

There's so many variants that its impossible to tell you. What spec is your SCSI card? How much cache is on your SCSI card? Are you running RAID 0 , 1, 5... How much other data traffic will be on your network? Are the servers on a hub or switch? How big are the files? Are you copying 25GB worth of 1k files or are you copying 25 1GB files? There are so many factors that can cause variations in speed.

You best bet is to test how long it takes to copy say 1GB of your data and then multiply that by 25.

Hope this helps, Glenn

I'm sure 1 night will be completely enought in your situation. Set up both NIC's to use 100 MB/s full duplex.
