Data Storage Backup

Hello all,

I would like to build myself a data storage server so I can back up data files. Ideally, i would like to access this from the the internet because I will be living in different places, different times of the year but the server will stay at my parents house. What OS should i buy to make this happen? I would like to have something with security login and also something so that 4-5 people can access it at one time.

Anyone have any ideas ?? I dont know where to start...
