after various horrid hard drive problems, i am trying to recover data using stellar phoenix and ontrack. usually, one of these apps successfully recovers all directories i ask it to, but now much of the directory structure and many of the files seem unrecoverable. i don't understand how recovery programs assign the folders of recovered data, with folder namesd like '$$$Folder00603', and how i can restore my original directory structure from there. any thoughts?

janimal666,
I use GetDataBack frequently and with great success.

You need to install the recovery software on a drive in a working system and slave the problem drive to it.

Most of these recovery programs recover a sector at a time if it is readable. Though you can specify a sector or a range of sectors for it to try and recover.

Then browse the directories that it has recovered to and collect the data that you need by burning to a CD/DVD..etc..

the drive is slaved o a working system, but the directory structure is gibberish. the files are mostly there, but many names are gone and the folder structure seems to have evaporated. thats my main issue.
