Hi everyone,

I was moving files from my Samba server running on Linux Mandrake over to my Windows 2000 server. And I accidentally deleted some important files in the process of moving the files.

Could someone please help me recover the deleted data!!
I have a tape backup but I was having problems with Dantz Retrospect Backup software so I didn't get a chance to backup the data.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thank you,
LoJACK

does anyone know of any methods I can go about to recovery the deleted data?

It depends on a number of things:

1) How big is your disk
2) do you have another spare disk partition somewhere
3) are you still writing to that server?

Ok,
1) = if its a BIG disk then there is a good chance that you have not overwritten the deleted file blocks.
2) = To be able to (attempt) to recover your deleted files you will probably need a FREE partition at least twice that of the one that has the deleted blocks.
3) = If your disk is small or nearly full/used and you have continued to write to it then there is a very reduced chance you will have not re-used the deleted blocks .. so you'r stuffed!

Now if you can meet 1+2 then you need to take a look at:
and get lazurus (The Coroners Tool Kit) from
BUT DONT MAKE THE MISTAKE OF COMPILING TCT ON THE DISK YOU WANT TO RECOVER!

Try and find another host/disk to use for the recovery.

I hope this helps.
Good Luck,
Laurie.

I will give it a try tarn.

thanx,
Dennis

Again, good luck.

I've had good results with it but I've only had to use it in disaster recovery "testing" never in a real situation. (and may it stay that way :¬)

Laurie.
