Hi guys,

A really bad thing happened to me yesterday. Yesterday around my neighbourhood, there was numerous power failures during the day. And later that night, my computer started acting weird. Of course, my computer acting weird could have nothing to do with the power failure, but it's a possible source of error.

Anyways, when I was downloading some random files using bittorrent, I started getting messages indicating CRC errors on the download-in-progress files. That confuses the crap out of me, so I stopped those downloads. Then, the same error message happened on some other files I was downloading via newsgroups. (Yes, I was running a number of download sessions, but that's not the point here...) So annoyed as I was, I shut down all the programs and decided to reboot my windows xp system to see if that fixes the problem. As it turns out, when I rebooted, I was unable to get back into windows because some DLL was missing or whatnot. So I was getting paranoid at this point, and I decided to reinstall windows xp so I can get inside to take a look at the files. (I had 2 partitions on this harddrive, one for the operating system, and one for the data storage, and I only reformatted and reinstalled the one on the operating system.) However, when the installation completed and I was able to get back into Windows, under My Computer, the other partition appeared without total size and available size. And when I double clicked on the partition, it says that it's not formatted and suggested me to format. Of course I didn't, because I didn't want to erase what could be left over.

So what I am trying to do now is to recover the data. Any ideas? One thing I am trying is to download a data recover utility called GetDataBack for NTFS available at I plan to do that tomorrow morning as I am running some hard drive checks on my other hard drive to make sure it's ok.

If any1 have experienced this and have a solution, or just have any idea in general, please let me know.

Thanks.

Can you see the partition using the dos prompt?
Also have you used the Disk management option to make sure that your drive has been given a drive letter.?

Just make sure that you use a program that does not write to the drive, and save the data to another drive.

Hello greentechner, if it is not toooo late, I suggest u to use getdataback software on another pc having your crashed disk as slave. It will work.
iwy luck

Can you get a copy of Knoppix?
It will try to mount that drive readonly and could allow you to copy the data off either over the network or to another drive or even burning cds / dvds.

Trojan.

I had a similar problem, I stuffed around for a day or so trying to get my files back and realised I was only making it worse. I bit the bullet and bought EASEUS DataRecoveryWizard ( that did the trick. It worked. Recovered almost everything.
