I've tried to do it in datareports but am having no luck, so I reloaded VB5 with it's crystal report function and hooked that up to VB6.

OK, my text from my db field has several lines. What I would like to do is fix the height of the textbox and have any data overflow start a new column inside the textbox, otherwise 'can grow' pushes the data below the textbox, off the bottom of the report. Is this possible?

TIA

No. There is no 'can grow horizontally' feature.
I think you would have to set up a series of textboxes side by side and put the first 'x' characters into the first one, the next 'x' characters into the second box and so on.
