I am looking for a system in which I pull up a program on my PC, dial a number, and retrieve data from the mobile device. The mobile modem will be attached to a tractor, and will have info such as temp, rpm, and stuff like that. I am looking at purchasing a modem like this: that requires a SIM card, which I would acquire from my phone service provider (AT&T or do you suggest a better one for this application?). I would like to write my own GUI for the PC interface, so that it would be exactly what we need. It would be sweet if the GUI interacted with a program that someone else has already written
I don't know what kind of modem I require on my PC. Can I use any old modem, or must it be a wireless modem. I mean, I can call my cell phone from a land-line, so shouldn't I be able to dial into this device from a wired modem? Also, is there PC software out there that would allow me to do what I want over GPRS or CDMA? All suggestions welcome. Thanks!
