Which of these databuses have been used vistors of this forum, please...

a)Profibus
b)Modbus
c)Canbus

Any preferences, problems ?

I'm in the early stages of setting up an outline specification for a new papermill control system and would be interested to hear users' comments. Any other databus systems I should consider? I'm green to this!

Thanks,
Graham

Hi there,

I work with ABB SC200 PLC's it uses
ControlNet (DeviceNet) it works great.
Watch-out for analogue IO, this makes your
bus load heavy. I uses this for postioning
with 7 nodes connected to it. the range is 1km
but with repeaters you can go even further.
Max 32 nodes.

for further info see there website ww.abb.com

Hi Kurtie,

Many thanks for the info!

If it's a new system I would consider Ethernet. Unless your connecting legacy equipment. The three databuses you list have been around for a long time but have limited number of devices that can be connected.

We are starting to use quite a bit of Profibus. We are a Siemens shop running PCS7 on redundant S7 400H processors w/ distributed I/O over redundant fiber. A+,N+,S+,L+,I+,CFOT,CCNT,ACSP,ISA CCST3
