DARPA Funds Rally Race

Next March, DARPA will conduct a rally race for autonomous ground vehicles from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. This could be fun, and have some benefits as well.

I've been watching this with great interest.

When the original rules were published, it was specified that the machines could not be controlled by a human begin. One of the contestants wrote to ask if it would be okay to tech a chimpanzee to drive the machine. The rule was changed to read that no living organism could control the vehicle.

If their abuse of the rules is any indication, the contestants are definately doing a lot of creative thinking.
