I am trying to set up a D-link dwl-g520 wifi card on my system. i have tried so many different things (such as pulling other cards, chaning settings, new drivers, switching slots, using another card, etc.) that i doubt its something simple but whenever i install the card it freezes the system. i had an msi kt4 ultra and when that would not work (after extensive advice from d-link tech support) i decided to try a new board. i picked up an msi kt6 and set that up. the card still crashes the system. now i have done some research and have come up with a couple of possibilities. one is that the card requires a pci 2.2 complient board (i cannot verify that the kt4 or kt6 are) and the second is that its a 5 volt card in a 3.3 volt slot or something along those lines. i don't much about slot voltage but it sounds like a posibility. if anyone has had a similar problem or has used the d-link with either board successfuly please let me know. thanks

oh i forgot to mention. i know the card works as i have used it successfuly in another none via system and i am successfuly using another wifi card of different make in my system. its an old linksys but its working without a hitch.

What exactly happens when the system crashes? ie. BOSD?

I have just installed a DWL-G520 in my ASUS A7V mainboard. Before i had 100% stability. Now it crashes all the time.. at random periods. I think it must be a hardware issue, when it crashes all i get is a frozen screen (as if you took a screen shot) and i have to hard reset.

Ahh!

All that's required for evil to suceed is for good men to do nothing.

to answer you question, the system just stops dead. the mouse won't move, the led lights don't blink its like i just froze it dead. i have to hit the reset button to get it back to life. also your board uses a via chipset right?

PCI 2.2 spec.

The LPPCI spec assumes a 3.3Volt PCI slot. For those that don't know the difference - 3.3Volt 32Bit PCI bus has the polarising edge connector slot near the Bracket end of the gold plated fingers whereas the 5Volt (original) 32Bit PCI bus has the polarising slot furthest away from the bracket. This was achieved in the 3.3Volt 32 Bit bus standard by simply turning the PCI connector around end-for-end on the motherboard to prevent incorrect voltage cards from being inserted. In the 64Bit PCI world there are two totally different connectors because the added gold fingers and connector pins are always furthest away from the bracket (although it's hard to see that a 64Bit 5Volt spec will survive). The vast majority of cards are still 32 bit 5Volt and some cards are auto detecting and compatible with both 3.3 and 5Volt specs and have two cutouts for both orientations of PCI connector.

Also there is possible to buy raiser boards that can be installed in the pci slot (between pci slot and pci-board)to provide 5v to pci cards needing this.

MSI KT4 should be PCI 2.2 compliant .
Beware not to overclock FSB on this board.
Because this will run the PCI frequenzy over it's spec 33mhz.Witch can cause some pci boards to crash.

I finaly fixed the problem. As it turns out on my Kt6 board there is a setting in the bios something like "system performance" i don't know exactly what changes it makes but the options are as follows, ultra, turbo, and fast. if you set it to either of the first two the card will not work in the sytem. if set to fast however there is no problem. like i said i won't know what the setting changes. i still have the fsb set to 333 and the ram clock to 400 and i am running my video card at full speed so i am happy. i have a feeling that it changes ratios on something and that if you messed around with spread spectrum you might be able to get it to work on a higher setting but for me i just want it running. thanks for all the help and keep posting.

With a Gigabyte GA-7DXE, the DWL-520 card hung on booting up W98SE until the Creative 1024 Live! sound card was removed. Also, W2K on similar mobo and soundcard failed with the DWL-520, although booted up ok - Wireless card showed "Error Code 10". Neither resolved yet...

ROGER - G0AOZ.

I updated the BIOS and chipset and card drivers as advised by tech support. ~Still crashing

I was then told that it was an IRQ conflict on 09 with my Sound Card Live. Removed that. ~Still crashing

Sigh.
