D-link D1-604 router question?

just bought and connected PC to a D-link D1-604 router

once you reboot PC, (which i do often)found it a hassle to reconnect-finally got it back online by shutting down & rebooting DSL modem,then router

manual doesnt say anything about re-connecting,once you see it has been assigned an IP address ,your connected-you have no window that shows you if connected,speed etc

is there any utility window that shows you if connected,speed ?

My OS (xp) has one you put in the taskbar. It's part of the OS networking software.
