I would like to know how to "cut out" images and place them on other images. Example: I have a photo of a person standing in a field. I want to take the person out of the field and place them in front of a background I created. How do I "cut out" around the person and paste that image somewhere else? Thanks.

Draw would not be the proper application. You would be better off with PhotoPaint. If you have the Suite, it is included. Just open Photopaint, and start a new image. Make sure 24 bit, CMYK color and a paper size big enough to hold your image is selected from the menu choices.

Go up top to an Arrow comming out from a disk (mouse over and hold until you read) Import Image.

Select your image, and import it.

Zoom in on your image so you can see enough detail to trace the image you want to cut out.

Find the mask tool on the left hand side, and fly out the menu until you see a bumpy-free-form circle. Select it.
This is your "Free-hand Mask tool".

Now, click one time, somewhere near where you want to begin tracing an outline around your image. Everytime you click, you will create a new point for the mask to follow your path (play with it, you'll see what I mean).

Go all the way around the image. Don't worry about the "elastic bounding line" that apears. This is just showing you what shape the mask would take if you double clicked at this point. If you mess up and want to start over, find the Red Circle wth the slash through it (like No Smoking signs have) and click it, that will remove the mask, and you can start again.

Once the image is completely traced, double click. This will automatically close the mask (so your last point doesn't have to touch your first point).

Now go up top to where it says "Object" Drop down that menu to "Create Form Mask" (I can't remember if Version 8 has a "Create" sub-menu, if it does, select it, then select "Copy from image", or whatever it says ("Object:Copy Selection" in version 11))

Now all of your work will seem to have disappeared. Be sure the arrow tool is selected, and click on your image that you want to remove. You should see a line surrounding the object (maybe not depending on your settings).

CTRL+C for "copy" once that object is selected (you can drag it around just to see the image is what you want).

Open the image with the new background you want this cut out image to be placed in, and click anywhere in that image to make that new window active.

Select the Paste Icon, or CTRL+V and the image is on your new backgound.

Any questions, let us know.
HTH,
Russell
