I added a couple fields to the contacts page in CRM. They show up when I look at them in Settings, System Customization. However when I go to contacts, the two fields aren't there. I'm not sure what to do to get it to show up. Is there a step that I am missing?

there is a step that is sort of hidden.

Open deployment manager on the CRM server.
Right click on the Deployment Manager icon and click on all task and then Publish customization.

Follow the wizard. You can do one form at a time.
After that you must restart the IIS service

Easy way. From the Command prompt type "iisreset". this will stop CRM from working for abour 15 to 20 seconds.

Hope this Helps
