custom printer paper size

My program only needs one line of print space per transaction (its a record keeping type program). when I wrote this progam I did it with windows ME in mind and I just made a custom paper 8 1/2 by 1/2 . However in windows XP most printer drivers don't a custom paper size anymore. Can I use the program to make a custom paper size, and if so how? Any advice would be appriciated.
