I have created a custom page layout, but I cannot seem to get the layout to show in the preview to the left. Is there something I am missing or someplace that needs to be modified to show this?

I simply created a new page through SP Designer based on Custom Content Types.

So you've created a custom content type, then created your custom page layout in SPD and saved it to your site. Its appearing in the list og page options but not showing a preview.

First you need to create a preview image (like a png or something) and upload it to somwhere on sharepoint. Then get the URL of that image.

Secondly, on the site with the custom layout go to 'site settings', under galleries select 'master pages and page layouts'. You should be able to find your custom layout in the master pages and page layouts. Edit that item and paste your preview image URL into the preview image field. Then save and close.

Sorry if that was too detailed - let me know how you get on!

How do I get the animation that the other templates have rather than a simple picture? Is this possible?

Thats actually part of the image file itself, it can contain animations. You can do this with png's or gif's (I think). You'll probably need some graphic package to do it but its just cycling through 2+ versions of the image to provide an animation effect.

Its all embedded in the png file itself.
