I have set up a s/sheet as read only, which I have done through W Explorer. What is to stop people from changing this property back and changing the master file? Would I have to speak to IS and ask them to sort it out, or is there another way?
Also, as it is now read only, and a user makes a change to the master file and attempts to save it, excel comes up with a msg box, and then the Save as dialogue box. Is there a way I can turn off this default message, and either create my own msg box, or JUST display the Save as dilaogue box? Please let me know if this hasn't made sense? Hope this is ok. If not, just let me know.

Your best bet for Read-Only would be to save the workbook as Read-Only from the Excel application. This configuration is then saved with the file, not through Windows.

As for streamlining the SaveAs process, you could write a VBA macro to automatically save the document when the user tries to close the file.

Thanks DSI,

How to save workbook as read only? I think I have done this before but can't for the life of me remember how to do it. Hope this is ok. If not, just let me know.

Nick,

When you want to save the file (you can do a Save As as well), click on the OPTIONS button, which allows you to set the file as READ-ONLY.

I now get a message saying that my speadsheet should be opened as read only. Is there any way i can turn this message off?? Hope this is ok. If not, just let me know.

Not that I can think of. You could enter a password for modify rights only, but it would still come up and ask for a password to modify or a READ-ONLY button to open as read only (strangely enough!)
