Custom List Form Help

I'm having a terrible time with customizing a Sharepoint Services 3.0 form for a calendar.

I've created an additional field (called EventID) that is used to in conjunction with a workflow. However, I do *not* want users to be able to edit this field. The field shows up on the NewForm.aspx and EditForm.aspx default forms and all I want to do is remove it from those two forms.

I've been researching and playing with it, but it seems ridiculously hard to do such a simple thing. I've tried creating a 'custom list form', as several sites describe, but it seems that the custom list form for calendars doesn't work correctly with All Day or recurring events (i.e. I create a custom list form from scratch, publish it, but when I click the "All Day" or "Recurring" boxes, the page returns an error.)

Any Sharepoint gurus out there who might be able to shed some light on the situation?
